Wow… what an amazing album this is… possibly not what you see us promoting on a regular basis, but I was so enthralled when I heard it I just couldn’t let it go without telling our clients just what a fantastic release it is!

DARK GREEN TREE is the rich Alternative Folk and Americana music of Ross Cockburn and Jay Brown. Lyrically and musically, the quality of the songwriting and playing is simply sublime, with the hushed vocal styles relaxed and haunting with echoes of the brilliant Jimmie Spheeris in places and Nick Drake at others, but what really surprised me was the likening to SNOW PATROL and the BYRDS that are in there too. Other reviewers have noted influences of Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby Stills & Nash in the album, and I get that too.

As a quick summery of some highlight tracks… ‘Skin And Bones’ is classic Americana with a huge hook in the chorus, ‘Yearn For Love’ could be mistaken for a haunting SNOW PATROL track and there’s even some 60’s BYRDS in there too with fantastic organ backdrop and beautiful jangling Rickenbacker guitar sounds, ‘When The Stars Go Blue’ is like classic Ryan Adams (from his classic ‘Gold’ album period, again with a strong hint of SNOW PATROL, and ‘Heart Of Winter’ has a blissfully ethereal male/female vocal arrangement.

‘Secret Lives’ is retro class singer/songwriter music in a modern age this is a totally captivating.
This album could be a lost 70’s classic – “classic” is certainly is, but 70’s it’s not – this is brand new from a new, but hugely talented duo that I can thoroughly recommend to any of our customers who just like great music!
If there is any justice DARK GREEN TREE surely must have a huger future ahead of them, and clearly I am not the only one who rates ‘Secret Lives’ highly… here are just a few samples of what others are saying of it…

5***** Review Maverick July/Aug 2015: "A blissful debut...outstanding stuff"
4**** Review - Independent - 12th June: "an unobtrusive, sensitively wrought, classic debut"
4**** Review - Daily Express - 12th June: "fabulous blend of folk and Americana"

Guests on their debut album include fiddle player John Maccusker (Kate Rusby, Battelefield Band), outstanding Arizona singer-songwriter Cera Impala, and Boo Hewerdine on guitar (who also produced and co-wrote many of the tracks).

‘Secret Lives’ has already had airplay from Radio 2’s Bob Harris (perfect music for Bob’s weekend listeners really) and I think I’m going to play it to death myself too!
