With Edgar Froese listed as co-composer on 3 of 4 tracks, this is the vanguard of the forthcoming ‘Quantum Gate’ album the trio are currently working on!

It has taken some brave and bold moves to continue in light of Edgar’s passing, but continue they have (as was Edgar’s wish) and here are the first fruits of the labours of this new TANGERINE DREAM line-up of: Thorsten Quaeschning & Ulrich Schnauss (synthesizers, keyboards, percussion & electronics) and Hoshiko Yamane (violin), and on the evidence of this mini-album, it look’s like Edgar’s dream will move on triumphantly.

‘Quantum Key’ opens with ‘Genesis Of Precious Thoughts’, the only one of the for tracks on this Cupdisc that is scheduled to be included on the new ‘Quantum Gate’ album, and it is indeed a fine piece of typically TD music that rhythmically builds and flows with a concurrent melodic streak running through its core. Hoshiko Yamane’s beautiful electric violin can be heard taking the lead at times amidst huge washes of symphonic synth textures set over the driving rhythms. This track has a really nice ethereal hypnotic effect on the listener and reminds me very so slightly of that classic opening track on the Harald Grosskopf album: ‘The Synthesist’!

The first couple of minutes of ‘Electron Bonfire’ open with a strong galloping rhythm backed with spacey string-synth textures with an undulated melody pushing through the mix. After the initial burst and a period of calm, the build-up restarts and gets into a real flowing feel, then at just over the three-minute mark a strong melody line blows in and the background effects start to roll all around a lead sound line that has morphed from a synth into an electronic violin.

‘Drowning In Universes’ opens in a sombre, dream-like state and develops beautifully up to a point where background rhythms are added over a foreground piano melody, with all manner of subtle cosmic effects swirling and flittering around. At the five-minute mark a stronger sequenced rhythm takes over for a minute, then it’s all gorgeous space atmospherics for the final five minutes, where haunting melodies from the synths and violin create a montage of little ships flying over the soundstage. The sound of the violin has a real heart-wrenching effect as it wafts through the waves of deep space effects to produce a real celestial, out of this world moment where Memotron flutes sounds add to the sombre feel of the atmosphere being created.
An excellent track and a perfect example of how “Space Music” should sound.

‘Mirage Of Reality’ goes back to a more familiar TD style rhythmic intro, understated at first as melodies start to emerge from the growing misty atmosphere that envelops the listener. The track develops into a powerfully atmospheric piece as the synths and percussive rhythms build, layer upon layer into a real wall of sound.

This Mini-Album finds the new-look TD getting off to a really fine start. With Edgar no longer there to lead the way there are obviously going to be differences – all of which seem for now to be very positive - but as the band have indicates on the sleeve, the great man’s influence is never going to be far away and will always be felt in the music this trio produce. I think Edgar would be proud of what Thorsten, Ulrich and Hoshiko have achieved so far under such difficult circumstances, and based on what I have heard on this Cupdisc, I for one am really looking forward to the music that the finished ‘Quantum Gate’ album will bring.

Here's the official info:

Edgar Froese, the head and founder of TANGERINE DREAM, had the wonderful idea of translating the current knowledge of the quantum physics - which he was very much interested in - into sound, and he had already started this project before his sad death in January 2015.
The ‘Mala Kunia’ Cup Disc was the first music out of the: ‘Quantum Years’ series that was published in November 2014 on the occasion of the MMW Festival concert in Melbourne.

It was a great fortune that Edgar still had the chance to discuss his vision with the remaining band members, and that Bianca, his wife, decided to continue with TANGERINE DREAM.
She knew that Thorsten, Ulrich and Hoshiko could face this huge challenge with their beautiful talents.
At the same time this task would be a unique chance for the music to come into life, so the band continued developing these musical ideas after Edgar’s sudden "change of his cosmic address".
Now you will have the chance now to listen to some wonderful new music. In honour of Edgar!

‘Quantum Key’ was released 30th November 2015.
