About this artist and his influences…
Jim Ottaway is already known at CDS Towers for his Melodic Instrumental Space Ambient series of CD-R releases: ‘Aurora’, ‘Orion’, ‘Centauri’ and ‘Liquid Moon’. Those, together with other themed releases: ‘Chill Factor’ and ‘Blitz’, plus his more recent factory pressed titles: ‘Power’ (originally a 2013 CD-R, but re-released in January 2015 on CD), 2015’s ‘Invisible Vortex’ and 2016’s ‘Southern Cross’, both of which are Digi-Pak productions, all stylishly presenting Jim's musical alter-ego as someone who injects 100% heart and soul into the music he makes and great attention to detail into how he presents it to his public.
While trying to create his own style of electronic music, Jim openly acknowledges the influence that artists such as: TANGERINE DREAM, Edgar Froese, ENIGMA, Vangelis, PINK FLOYD, Johannes Schmoelling, Christopher Franke, CODE INDIGO, Gary Wright, RADIO MASSACRE INTERNATIONAL and Aussie artists: Christopher Buckman, Tony O'Connor and Lisa Gerrard have had on his music over the years.
About this album…
One year after the release of Jim Ottaway’s electronic synth CD ‘Invisible Vortex’, the award winning Australian composer and synthesist has released his 9th album, a new Space Ambient CD entitled: ‘Southern Cross’.
It is Jim’s first Space Ambient release since the well-received ‘Liquid Moon’ in 2011, and covers familiar territory to that album in particular. However, ‘Southern Cross’ has greater depth and feel to it.
The album is made of six tracks that represent the stars of the Southern Cross… one of the night sky’s natural beauties of the southern hemisphere.
Jim says: “At night when I look out my studio window (Gold Coast hinterland, Australia) I can often catch a glimpse of the constellation of Crux which features the beautiful Southern Cross and it consists of five stars. These five stars are believed to be ten to twenty million years old, and I have tried to capture the beauty and mystique of this area in the cosmos with individual tracks representing each of the five stars, plus a final piece that takes the form of a hypnotic soundscape that takes the listener on a journey around the Southern Cross... a journey of timeless motion!”
Track lengths are long-ish and vary from fourteen to five minutes, each with a different feel and texture, however they all blend together beautifully and make for an enjoyable listening experience … just close your eyes, relax and enjoy the journey.
Jim started recording tracks for ‘Southern Cross’ in May 2013 and wrapped up production in February 2016.
The final track list was selected from many recordings produced during this period. Some of the remaining pieces recoded during these sessions will appear on future releases.
The album was produced using the following equipment and software: RME Fireface 800, Studio One, Cubase, Korg Karma, Yamaha Motif ES, Roland XV-5050 and various VSTs including Omnisphere, Alchemy, Clara’s Vocals, Morphology, ART Pyrite, SynthMaster & Cygnus.
Jim has dedicated this album to the memory of his mother, Madge, who passed away in 2015.
