We have finally managed to get some more copies of the Sold-Out Greg Lake Box, so if you want one, you need to act FAST as it’s rare and a fitting tribute to Greg’s memory, especially if you are an avid ELP / (early) KING CRIMSON fan!
‘Live In Piacenza’ is a VERY LIMTED release recorded in Audiophile Quality! It is a performance recording from Greg Lake’s last tour, recorded on November 28th, 2012 in a sold out Teatro Municipale in Piacenza, Italy.
Regarding this Boxed Set … if you, like me, originally thought…. No, ninety-odd pounds for a box set featuring Greg Lake in an acoustic performance with just a “Documentary” DVD over and above the Clear Double Vinyl LP and Gold CD (both identical to the individual copies) plus poster / stickers etc. – as it was first advertised – it can’t be worth the money … then you, like me, would be WRONG!!! – It all comes down to the way you “view” the box in the widest sense of the word!
Why do I say this … well, having now seen the DVD in its entirety, I have totally changed my mind, because this alone almost makes the box well worth investing in, and for several reasons, the main ones being …
1. The DVD is not what I would call a “Documentary” … it is a front row seat for the FULL near 90-minute performance, start-to-finish, with add-on documentary footage.
2. Although he is “solo”, with his voice in as fine nick as ever, he also has backing recordings – some re-arranged by Lake himself (possibly with help from some other musicians), and others using Keith Emerson’s original Moog/keyboard parts, and these emulate full-band performances! So, you get a Mellotron-laden medley of KING CRIMSON’s ‘Epitaph’ & ‘In The Court Of The Crimson King’ that sound truly “epic”, ‘I Talk To The Wind’ - from that same first KC album - together with Flute parts, a full arrangement of ELP’s ‘C’est La Vie’, ‘Lucky Man’ with big Moog solo at the end and ‘Karn Evil 9-Part 1 – 1st Impression - Part II‘ like it was ELP in full flow! Greg plays bass, acoustic & electric guitars plus keyboard.
3. The DVD has TWO versions of ‘Lucky Man’ on it (the CD only has one): his own solo vocal performance (exclusive to the DVD) and the special performance with the three other singers sharing the lead vocal, both with the big Moog solo section at the end, whereas the CD contains only the multiple vocal version!
4. In-between each track Greg talks to the audience at length, telling stories from his youth, through his time in KING CRIMSON and all the way up to later-day ELP … and I found this both informative and entertaining.
You have to ask yourself this … would I be happy to pay over £40 each for a pair of tickets for a performance such as this? If the answer is resounding YES, then together with the facts above and other contents of the box, it sure has to be well worth the asking price – made even more so, given the fact that Greg is now sadly no longer with us.
This is a true memorial to one of the trio of musicians that made up ELP - three of the greatest rock icons of all time!
It was a very special, magical evening, as Greg remembered in his outstanding autobiography: ‘Lucky Man’.
The audience was so warm and he gave such a passionate performance.
The Mayor of Piacenza and the entire municipality attended the concert and went on stage thanking Mr. Lake for opening the “Musiche Nuove in Piacenza” festival. The concert was a triumph and eventually on January 9, 2016 the trustees of Conservatorio Nicolini of Piacenza gave Greg Lake the first honorary degree ever given by a Conservatorio.
This is a wonderful recording, bringing the ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’ project to its highest point.
Exclusively for this concert, Greg performed a version of ‘Lucky Man’ with three special guests: LE ORME’s leader Aldo Tagliapietra, ex-PFM and ACQUA FRAGILE's great vocalist Bernardo Lanzetti and the young and talented Annie Barbazza, making the Piacenza show even more special and rare.
"One outstanding memory I have of performing 'Songs Of A Lifetime' show in Europe was on 28th November 2012 in the small city of Piacenza in Italy. The concert took place at a wonderful theatre there, the Teatro Municipale, which looks rather like La Scala in Milan, with beautiful gold balconies and crystal chandeliers. I love Piacenza, and the Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Nicolini there awarded me an honorary degree in 2016 for the way that KING CRIMSON and EMERSON LAKE & PALMER helped to bring classical music into young people’s lives - what an honour."
