The film contains a mix of interviews with current and former band members, plus associates and footage from Froese’s archives, including the early TD incarnations in West Berlin as a psychedelically inspired band.
It also takes a look at the pre-TD days when Froese played beat-type music, sounding very much like THE BEATLES in their early Hamburg days. The base dialogue is in German but the DVD also contains an international ENGLISH version, plus extracts from two live concerts as Bonus Material!

Edgar Froese, bandleader of TANGERINE DREAM and pioneer of electronic music, is on a lifelong mission to find the ultimate sound. His constant quest takes him and his fellow band members to worldwide success, all the way to the Hollywood studios in Los Angeles.
After his death in January 2015, Edgar Froese left a legacy of forty-eight years of music history.
This film shows previously unreleased footage shot by the band-leader himself: For the first time, we see the band backstage on tour in Europe and the USA, at photo shoots with Jim Rakete or on holiday at the seaside. Records and interviews with his wife Bianca Froese-Acquaye, with band members, close associates and fellow artists map the unique history of TANGERINE DREAM: a tribute to the musician Edgar Froese and the era of electronic music.

This is a great item for TD fans to own and complements the recently released ‘Force Majeure’ book perfectly – The DVD also gets a mention in that book.
The dialogue is in German with English or German subtitles, but the DVD also contains the international ENGLISH version with English subtitles for the German parts.
There is also extracts from two live concerts as Bonus Material, all adding up to a total playing time of 152 Minutes (Film: 87:00 / Extras: 65:00) – Surely a must for any TD fan!

Here’s extracts from a review by Shane Murphy (dailyreview.com.au):

TANGERINE DREAM might be one of those bands whose music you’ve heard but may not know it.
Their synth’n’sequencer sound has drifted through our consciousness in countless soundtracks right through the ’80s and beyond from movies such as: ‘Risky Business’, ‘The Keep’ and many more.

This 2017 documentary from German director Margarete Kreuzer is homage to the late Edgar Froese — the founder and unifying personality behind Germany’s TANGERINE DREAM until his death in 2015. The focus here is on respect and acclaim, which is not surprising given how little time has passed since he died. As such, there’s little hint of the difficulties and challenges that the band faced and its inevitable personality conflicts.

The 87-Minute main film is a mix of interviews with current and former band members, plus associates and footage from Froese’s archives. Structurally, it’s similar to most music documentaries you might have seen, though the opening shots of Froese wandering on a beach and looking like a bug under a microscope are a great find.

There’s some material on the early incarnations of TANGERINE DREAM in West Berlin as a psychedelically inspired band and a look at the pre-TD days when Froese played beat-type music, sounding very much like THE BEATLES in their early Hamburg days.

Most of the film focuses on TD’ s rebirth in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s as an electronic band when they used the first Moog synthesisers and sequencers. The influence of Surrealism, and Salvador Dali in particular, are among some of the reasons offered for the band’s change in direction, which is presented as a rebellion of sorts against beat music. The oppressive atmosphere in West Berlin during Soviet days and the pressures that produced the Zodiac Arts Lab also influenced the band’s evolution.

Maybe it’s related to the style of electronica that they played, but it feels like emotions in ‘Revolution Of Sound’ are reigned in. Everyone simply talks about what a force Froese was and how he drove the band ever onward.

Having created over 100 albums of (primarily) original work in a 40 plus year career, the niche they found seems to have kept them going happily right up until 2014 when Froese handed the controls to his protégé, Thorsten Quaeschning. TANGERINE DREAM is apparently bigger than the sum of any of its parts– the protests from Froese’s son notwithstanding.

‘Revolution Of Sound’ was released on 19th March 2018.
