Superb Deluxe Edition from batch #1 of the much-requested modernisation of his A&M catalogue with up-to-date Remaster, album Quad Mix & Bonus Tracks!

February 2015 saw the much-requested modernisation of Rick Wakeman’s A&M back-catalogue with up-to-date Remastering and Special Deluxe Editions on the entire catalogue!

To kick it all off A&M launched two of the big ones: ‘Six Wives Of Henry VIII’ and ‘Myths & Legends Of King Arthur & The Knights Of The Round Table’.

Remastered by Andrew Walter at Abbey Road these are part of the first scheduled batch of RW A&M re-issues for 2015.
Issued as Standard CD’s, Deluxe CD+DVD-A and 180gm Vinyl LP’s, they are a real treat for Wakeman fans, and to cap it all, they've received the official seal of approval from Rick himself when prior to the release he commented: "I am told that the old A&M catalogue is very close to hitting the shops, (what shops we have left that is) and the remastering has been phenomenal. Quite the best I’ve ever heard. The vinyl too is going to sound great."

We at CDS Towers have now previewed them from the finished products and here are the results…

This Special Deluxe CD+DVD Edition set comes in a 4-Panel Digi-Pak with a 16-Page Booklet that is larger than the standard edition’s one!
Both discs feature a replication of the 2nd generation Silver and Ochre A&M Label design.
The 2015 Remaster of the main album – Rick’s first and fully instrumental album – is, apart from the odd tiny little noise on one track, an extremely good reproduction from a master that is now over forty years old! The sound is open and warm; with every one of Rick’s keyboards totally legible and crystal clear in the mix.
There are 3 Bonus Tracks on the Audio CD. These are nothing new really – two are Single Edits and one is an Early Mix.
There are 3 versions of the album on the 2nd disc: an LPCM 96/24 Stereo Mix, a DTS 96/24 Quad Mix and a Dolby Digital Quad Mix, that last of which is a personal preference for me as it feels warmer and more full-bodied, but maybe that will all depend on the machine it is being played on.
The One Video Track comes at the end of the DVD-A, and it is the footage Rick recorded for BBC TV’s ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ in January 1973 when he was promoting the album’s release. Introduced by Bob Harris, Rick and his band run through: ‘Catherine Howard’, which is a near carbon copy of the album version with a minute chopped off the end due to an early fade back to Harris. Seeing this again would prompt me to suggest that it was not only the pop artists that “mimed” on TV back in these days! So, if not all, certainly some of the audio was pre-recorded, because even though Rick’s “finger synching” and “octopus” like work around all of his many keyboards was amazingly good, even he could not disguise that there were moments when a Mellotron has heard and the great man’s hands was nowhere near one of them. Still, for me it is an essential piece of Wakeman memorabilia and a real bonus to have on this 2015 edition of the album!
