The 7th album in a series of 2014/15 Remastered reissues of the entire catalogue by this legendary Instrumental Classical Rock band!

This 2015 edition of the ‘Great Balloon Race’ album has been Newly Remastered and is part of the 4th batch of the continuing series of reissues of the entire SKY catalogue.

Formed in 1979, SKY brought together the worlds of rock and classical music in a highly successful and inspiring way. Featuring the gifted talents of guitarist John Williams, percussionist Tristan Fry, legendary bass player Herbie Flowers, former CURVED AIR keyboard player Francis Monkman and guitarist Kevin Peek, SKY recorded their debut album at Abbey Road studios in the early months of 1979.
That self-titled release debut reached the UK top ten in May 1979 and went on to achieve Platinum status in the UK, and was also a major hit in Europe and Australia.
Also a huge live attraction, SKY released their second album in April 1980. ‘Sky 2’ was a fine achievement, featuring the hit single: ‘Toccata’, and it topped the UK album charts upon its release.
For the band’s 3rd album, Steve Gray replaced Francis Monkman on keyboards, but the band continued their run of success as ‘Sky 3’ reached the UK top ten upon its release in March 1981.
That line-up remained for their 1982 album: ‘Forthcoming’ and was yet another successful chart release.
The band undertook an extensive tour in Australia in 1982 with several concerts captured by a mobile recording unit and later mixed at Abbey Road studios for the release of their ‘Five Live’ double album in January 1983.
In 1983 the Williams, Fry, Flowers, Gray & Peek line-up recorded ‘Cadium’, their 6th album, at Abbey Road Studios. The LP was released in December that year and was the last SKY album to feature John Williams.

After John Williams departed, the band continued as a quartet and in 1985 they recorded the ‘Great Balloon Race’ album at studios in Australia and London. A fine, if overlooked record, it was in fact one of the most innovative of SKY’s later albums.
Unavailable for over 20 years, ‘Great Balloon Race’ has been Newly Remastered from the Original Master Tapes, plus the Original Album Artwork is Fully Restored and the Booklet features a New Essay.
