‘Ascension’ is the second album from this classy young Canadian band and for some reason the press info continually draws comparisons to DREAM THEATER, and we really don’t know why, because this band sounds nothing at all like DREAM THEATER – Perhaps the comparison could be drawn from the vocals of Étienne Doyon who in some vague way might sound a little bit like James LaBrie at times!
So, for the benefit of any doubt, there is no real metal to be heard on ‘Ascension’ - INNER ODSSEY is a Melodic Progressive Rock band that at various points in the album make musical references to KANSAS, YES, SAGA, and PORCUPINE TREE, but that’s about as “heavy” as it gets. There is plenty of atmospherics with the main emphasis focussing on strong melody, fantastic fluid soloing, outstanding vocals and a clean, open and powerful production.
‘Ascension’ really has everything you could want from a good – well excellent actually - melodic Progressive Rock album, and as such we can heartily recommend it to you anyone with a panache for melodic Prog.
INNER ODYSSEY’s line-up is: Étienne Doyon (lead vocals / drums / percussion), Vincent Leboeuf Gardeau (electric & acoustic guitars / vocals), Simon Gourdeau (bass) and Mathieu Chamberland (keyboards) with guest musicians: Pierre Doyon (flute on ‘Lifelong Misery’) and Dominique Plante (Rhodes on ‘Something More’).
