As always at CDS Towers, we are constantly on the lookout for music – in several genres - that we consider being a bit special. That includes listening for new talent in the flooded “Electronic Music” world, where those with the ability to take the listener of an exciting journey that never becomes dull or boring, and offers thrilling new experiences round every corner are the true winners – Johan Tronestam is one such artist!
Not too many EM albums can keep me focused from start to finish, but Johan Tronestam’s releases certainly do!
The first one I heard was 2016’s: ‘Arthur West Above The Clouds’, and after that I couldn’t wait to trace and investigate all of his other previous releases, and none of these has disappointed either!
With Johan Tronestam’s entire catalogue now available from CDS Towers, this is the kind of instrumental EM that has the effect of constantly tempting the listener towards your amplifier’s volume control … to turn it UP and allow you to get deeper into and more involved in the entire listening experience!
Just like the greats of the more melodic side of the EM world – Dyson, Jarre, Schroeder, Schmoelling, Pickford, Shreeve, TD and Vangelis to name just a few, Tronestam’s real secret is this … He keeps it pure and simple and musical …ALL the time!
Each and very track is a total joy - This really is the kind of stuff I can listen to for hours on end and never tire of – it just has that attention grabbing something extra that is missing from so much of the EM that is produced nowadays!
So, Johan Tronestam may well be a new name to most CDS Towers customers right now, but believe me…not for much longer! This Scandinavian Synth musician makes wonderful music of such a high standard that I’m certain he is about to rise into the higher stature regions occupied by many of the past EM masters! If the world of Electronic Music had an equivalent TV show to the “X-Factor”, then without a shadow of a doubt this guy would walk away with that coveted record deal!
Johan Tronestam’s music produces some of THE most exciting, goosebump-enducing moments I’ve experienced from a Synth music artist in a long time. With many other releases you often feel you’ve heard it all before and over the years these moments of euphoria have tended to be few and far between now, but this, well it’s a Synth Music fan’s dream … well, mine anyway, and I suspect, a whole lot of others are going to follow!
There’s ups, downs, highs and lows... it’s all there by the truck-load, constantly keeping your attention from start to finish and delivering everything you could possibly want from an Electronic Music album that has the perfect mix of all the key ingredients - atmosphere, melody and rhythm.
Drawing on the vast wealth of ideas he clearly has in his head, Tronestam’s has the knack of building - from simple beginnings - deliciously addictive central body-moving grooves and topping them off with haunting, emotionally charged melodic hooks that spiral, twist and turn through slick key changes.
Colourful atmospheric backdrops of strings and other keyboard effects wash around the driving, infectious, ever-evolving rhythmic patterns and nothing ever stands still for one moment!
Everything seems to come from the heart and all the compositions have an air of flawless perfection, changing and evolving just at the right moment and delivering the music in a way comparable only to that of which past masters of the art have been able to achieve. Just as one striking example, think how Jean Michel Jarre’s original ‘Oxygene’ album affected you when you first heard it!
Tronestam’s level of creativity is without question – he is definitely a cut or two above the rest, so what is his secret? Could it be that this is just someone with a huge “musical” talent that just happens to be using synthesizers to create the music he has in is head, as opposed to those who don’t necessarily have the same level of compositional skills, but through the utilization of all the wonderful technical wizardry available today, can create something similar, but often it’s cold and derive of any sense of real feeling.
The styles are nothing new – Tromstam is obviously strongly influenced (as most modern-day EM musicians are) by the genre’s past pioneers - it’s just the quality of his material that (for me) makes him stand head and shoulders above many other present day protagonists of the Electronic Music genre!
About the album concept…
‘Arthur Went Above The Clouds’ has been a magical journey and conceptually it been formed by Arthur C. Clark's amazing books and vision of the future. Clarke has also been a great assistance in the development of technology for space missions. This album contains nine tracks that were selected out of twenty created for the project, so the album might get a sequel (I sure hope so – Ed.)
The album is dedicated to Johan Tronestam’s beloved Father who suddenly had to leave this earth in March 2016 - he was a dreamer and full of ideas.
