Recorded at the National Space Centre planetarium in Leicester, 01/11/03, this is a superb piece of sound-sculpting that sounds absolutely fantastic!

In the past, Ian often used concert appearances as a testing ground for material that would then see a full studio re-working before release. Indeed this was the original intention with this concert but on listening back to the tapes in the post-concert calm of his studio, it became apparent that this material had really worked well in the concert environment. There was passion and delicacy in equal measures, and a sonic construction to the semi-improvised set that would be next to impossible to recreate in the hard, cold glare of the studio spotlights. The album spans over 10 tracks with a total running time of almost seventy minutes. The first 9 tracks form a continuous suite of music, the last track being the encore piece from the performance. One of the main hopes that Ian had when he formed the DiN label in 1999 was to provide a melting pot for several areas of electronic music to cohabit and intermix. Many have seen it as the perfect environment for the marriage of early Teutonic/space music styles with more modern forms of electronica. Boddy feels that ‘Chiasmata’ is a perfect example of this and shows just how comfortably he has absorbed these influences to create a confident assemblage of sonic genres interlaced with his own virtuosic sound design. The music ranges from deep space ambience through chilled out analogue grooves by way of classical orchestrations and ‘Berlin School’ sequencing to intimate solo piano improvisations. The main suite of music seamlessly blends all these elements into a continuous set that ebbs and flows with the assured touch that Boddy brings to bear on his concert appearances - A skill he had developed with over 80 concert appearances spanning twenty-three years of playing "electronic music" at this stage in his career.

Interestingly enough, you’re nearly nine minutes into this album before you hear anything resembling a melody or a rhythm, as a swirling mass of layered space synths conveys all sorts of emotions as it unravels, totally unlike most space intros, with way more going on, and it’s a great opening statement. Then it sets its sights on melody and rhythm as this bouncing, undulating synth and electro-percussive rhythm strays all around the sonic spectrum, with a gorgeous string synth line that is right out of the ‘New Age Of Earth’ ASH RA way of doing things is heard at the back of the mix – Now here, you lament because (a) it’s right at the back of the mix, and (b) it disappears after a couple of minutes, but that’s Boddy for you – Anyway, the rhythm and melody subside to leave another more calming ocean of blissful synths to unfurl, with the odd tinkling, clanking sound adding to the textural enjoyment, then it slowly fades. A lone electric piano-sounding lead emerges from the darkness as synths bubble up underneath, and string synths glide overhead, and the outlook changes to one of spacey magic, where a superbly female operatic voice in electronically generated over almost Frippertronic-sounding cosmic synths that appear upfront. That too eventually fades, to leave a sea of dark space synths from which emerges this undulating synth bass rhythm and cascading synths that slowly add layers in a sort of stripped down manner. A jazzy electric piano-like lead-line appears, with the rhythmic backdrop bouncing all over the place and a heavenly choir hovering way in the distance, and a quite moody, serene atmosphere ensues as the piece gathers steam and adds further layers, to eventually drive forward in a slow-moving hail of bouncing rhythms and strung-out chords – ‘Electro-Ambient-Jazz’ being the only phrase you could uses to describe it. This continues for most of the eleven-minute track which slowly fades on a wave of calming synths then it’s into another full-sounding sea of amorphous space synths, swirling all around the mix in assorted layers for over ten minutes, before a strong marching rhythm appears, electronic and percussive and beating together, and then a string synth wells up to take over the lead work with another lead synth melody line flying on top, as the whole thing takes on an almost industrial-symphonic form and just takes off to eventually achieve orbit, before flying back down and fading to earth once more. After a minute of calm, a cyclical synth/bass/rhythm appears, percussive beats are added, then synth effects swirl all around and a kind of souped-up electro-ambient-dub amalgam unfolds, with strident rhythms, assorted samples and synths all sounding exactly like something off one of the better Namlook/Laswell albums, as the near ten minute track motors once more to a fading end. This leaves just a lone layer of cosmic synth music, shortly joined by an almost romantic piano line, and then it all comes to an end – well almost – one final track is still to come in the form of an encore. This piece starts up with synths cascading up and down before a lurching electro-percussive beat begins, then rippling piano ensues and percussive taps add to the rhythm being generated as deep bass emerges from below and all manner of synths cover the mix. As this mix of melody and techno-thud move into view, layers and textures are spiralling all over, in and around the main body of the piece, eventually dying away to leave a wave of intense sounding space synths that sounds like a rocket taking off as it goes into one final orbit.
