PLEASE NOTE: BEFORE YOU ORDER… Those of you who own the 2019 TD ‘In Search Of Hades’ 18-Disc Box Set will already have all the music that is featured in the ‘Phaedra 50th Anniversary’ Box, as all 6 Discs were part of that massive ‘Hades’ collection. The only difference is on Disc 6 (the BluRay), where the ‘Oedipus Tyrannus’ tracks featured on the ‘Hades’ version seem to have been removed. The 52-Page Book (inc cover) also shares many images and probably a fair amount of the text with what was included in the ‘Hades’ book.

So, this ‘Phaedra 50th Anniversary’ Box is really only for those who wish to keep their TD collections complete.
However, as we published earlier, this was always going to be a small run by major record company standards, and as expected, the box is already sold-out at source as of release day. This happened with both the ‘Hades’ and ‘Pilots’ Virgin boxed sets, and it has come to pass with this one too!! So, pre-ordering was indeed essential, but we do have a very small amount of leftover stock from our pre-order allocation, but once that is gone that will be it!

Originally released by Virgin Records in February 1974, 'Phaedra’ spent fifteen weeks on the UK charts upon its release. Recorded at The Manor studios in November 1973, it was the band’s first album for Virgin and vitally, it was the first record in which they used a sequencer. This is seen as the moment the band created their signature sound, and this development in their music production would go on to have a huge impact and influence on electronic music to this day and had a fundamental effect on ‘Kosmische Musik’ - a term coined by TANGERINE DREAM founding member Edgar Froese and one which came into regular use before ‘krautrock’ and was preferred by some German artists.
‘Phaedra’s groundbreaking use of synthesizers and sequencers created a lush and immersive soundscape that was unlike anything else at the time. Its success came from word-of-mouth and self-discovery, despite the record receiving no radio play support upon its original release, it integrated itself into cultural society and helped to popularise the concept of electronic music as an art form and showed that it could be just as, if not more so, complex and sophisticated than any other forms of music.

The ‘Phaedra 50th Anniversary Box’ was released on 18th April 2025.
