Widely regarded as one of the most influential acts in electronic, cosmic and ambient music, TANGERINE DREAM is captured here during one of the most creative periods of the band’s career.
Recorded at the Paramount Theater in Portland on April 20th 1977, this remarkable performance features the legendary line-up of Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke and Peter Baumann at the height of the ‘Ricochet’ and ‘Stratosfear’ era. Blending hypnotic sequencer patterns, Mellotron textures, analog synthesizers and constantly evolving improvisations, the trio creates a mesmerizing sonic journey where technology and emotion become one.
Unreleased for nearly fifty years, this extraordinary recording is now available for the very first time on any physical format, Vinyl or CD, newly mastered from the original 1977 tapes.
This Deluxe 2CD Edition includes an Exclusive Album Sticker, Printed Inner Sleeves and stunning Blue and Yellow coloured discs, plus it has a BONUS TRACK!
The Deluxe 2LP Vinyl Edition includes an Exclusive Album Sticker, Printed Inner Sleeves and stunning Blue and Yellow Vinyls.
This Portland Concert – April 20th 1977 is an essential document from TANGERINE DREAM’s golden era!
Here are some extracts from info notes made by the person close to the tape source provider…
The concert was captured on a pair of 1/4" reels, one Scotch 207 branded and one BASF 3600 series. Neither of these tapes required baking and apparently there isn’t any noticeable difference in sound quality between the two different source tapes.
The recording was made by audio engineer John Fisher of Bakerloo Productions inc. using a Crown CX-844 deck running at 15 IPS, which is apparently as highly prized as the performance it has immortalised!
‘Cherokee Lane’, ‘Monolight’, and the track we are assuming was the encore are on the first reel, while the two lengthy improvised tracks that made up the second set are contained on the second reel.
It would appear Fisher switched back to the first reel to capture the encore, and this may have been done on the spur of the moment because there is a gap of nearly 4 empty minutes of tape between ‘Monolight’ and the encore on that tape reel.
If you hover your pointer over the album cover art you will see a photo of the tape reels. They were in excellent condition and were clearly well cared for.
It is difficult to process the fact that these items have been sitting in a cupboard somewhere for half a century and yet sound like they were recorded yesterday!
