Recording Spyra made with Roksana Vikaluk during the Solingen "sequenzen" festival, and a great set played mainly ‘live’ in one of the venue’s art studios!

‘InSPYRAtion’ is an album has 4 very different tracks of improvised electronic music that includes some passages that make use of the female voice as a textural instrument, in a similar fashion to past Klaus Schulze / Lisa Gerrard collaboration sets.

Wolfram Spyra says about this concert: “We have to return to improvisation with unpredictable analog sounds structures! Not in the same sense of “everything was better in the old days”, but nevertheless in the sense of complex structures of sequential sounds which challenge us, the live musicians of today, not to reel off a ready-made program, but to play, discover, and us to be surprised by things that, beyond presets and storable processes, allow a direct flow that can not be pre-planned!”

‘Zeitstaub’ clocks up just under half an hour and opens with almost six minutes of panoramic soundscaping created on string synths overlaid by textural voice overtones before dissolving into a wash of flying sequencer patterns with string-synths forming symphonic melodic layers on top. Ghostly choral layers are added as the passage develops and in builds layer over layer, and from there the intensity increases up to the eighteen minute mark where the electronic mists clear to reveal gentle ethereal vocal tones. That leads into a newly formed sequencer passage at the twenty-minute mark followed by chiming synth textures entering a soundscape awash with harmonic elements as the piece builds towards its climax.
‘Flying Thoughts’ has a sequencer based backdrop overlaid by piano improvs, with sweeping string synth layers and other electronic effects coming in all the way through.
‘Lux Aeterna’ runs with powerful vamping synth/sequences accompanied by haunting ethereal female voice overlays.
‘Aerial Vox’ opens with an electronic beat and keyboard melodies and the sound layers expand into a glorious expansive soundscape. At almost the five-minute mark the vocals emerge and weave around Spyra’s splendidly flowing synth improvisations. These superb synth solos really build into a fantastic groove that the listener can really “get into”. The final few minutes are quite grandiose at times as sweeping string synths spiral all over the soundstage before closing in a hail of sound effects.
