Brand new mainly instrumental album to blow you away from Dirk Jan Müller (of COSMIC GROUND fame) and his band of psychedelic kraut cosmonauts!
ELECTRIC ORANGE: “When the feeling for space and time disappears” by Lennart Brauwers...
Psychedelic sounds merge into an endless carpet of sound, nothing can really be assigned here. But you don't have to; it's better to switch your head off!
Only rarely do records like ‘Ada’ appear, which offer seemingly endless possibilities for dreaming away - because there is so much history in them:
"The new album is something like the essence of over 30 years of ELECTRIC ORANGE”, explains Dirk Jan Müller (of COSMIC GROUND fame) who started the long-running project in Aachen in 1992 and later developed it into a great band.
ELECTRIC ORANGE are clearly rooted in the Krautrock of the 1970’s (and sometimes use the equipment of that era), so many tracks are reminiscent of the well-known legends of the genre: CAN, TANGERINE DREAM, AMON DUUL - a mixture of everything the band members love.
In this world, every groove is even better if you keep it going for minutes. ELECTRIC ORANGE 's music develops continuously, spherical sounds come and go again... or are replaced by experimental wah-wah guitars. Space sound effects? Film samples? Yes! ELECTRIC ORANGE create a sprawling world open and then lead the listener through; their music is driving and dreamy at the same time.
Take the opener: ‘Henry's Bead’, which crackles and bubbles and builds up steadily. Something is brewing, you think when you listen, and that's exactly how it is: Tracks like ‘Erebus’ follow, in which an acoustic guitar that is atypical for the genre meets wild flutes - you are reminded of the Progressive Rock of YES or KING CRIMSON - and it becomes clear that this music has no rules. It sounds apocalyptic in places, but (in the best possible sense) making it seem as if it will never end. You have the feeling throughout that anything could happen.
In the title track, a leading vocal voice à la Syd Barret appears, completely unexpectedly, whereas the abstract piece ‘Tage Der Selbstmummifizierung’ is harder to grasp and borders on ambient music - only that on ‘Ada’ there is constant movement and something is happening in every corner. Sometimes listening seems to become almost visual: EO makes music that you want to look around at for ages.
Compared to other, more free releases by ELECTRIC ORANGE, ‘Ada’ is also more inviting and accessible: "In the past, the records were often completely improvised, recorded live in the studio. Then we thought we had to do something different - as we do with every record. The pieces have become much shorter and more compact. They used to be longer, but this time we've brought everything more to the point."
‘Ada’ is an extremely likeable work of art because of this openness, but at the same time so much is happening. Take ‘Lucid Frames’, for example: Apparently stoned brass instruments fly around, an ultra-distorted guitar solo pushes the whole thing towards noise rock; later there is a deep, droning saxophone, of course. The groove continues underneath. It is a basic framework like a flying carpet on which you float through a universe of hypnotic sounds. ELECTRIC ORANGE do not create songs, but compact trips - they suck you in and carry you away.
ELECTRIC ORANGE line-up for ‘Ada’ is: Dirk Jan Müller (analogue & modular synthesizers / Farfisa Compact / Mellotron / audio generator / bass on tracks 1 & 2), Dirk Bittner (electric & acoustic guitars / 11-string guitar / vocals / voice / trumpet / percussion / banjo / Thai khim), Werner Wieczorek (electric bass / backing vocals / guitar on track 2) and Eric Karow [drums / backing vocals). Special Guest: Harald Königs (flute / bass flute & bass saxophone)
‘Ada’ was produced by Double D, recorded between 2023 & 2024 at Studio Fleisch, Aachen, Germany and mastered by Eroc at The Ranch.
‘Ada’ is released on 14th March 2025.
