There’s an old Prog-Rock expression that, because it became such a cliché, is rarely used by reviewers these days, and that is: “Mellotron Drenched”, but if ever there was a band worth resurrecting it for, it’s TRION!

That saying can be applied to this, or indeed the 2013 release: ‘Funfair Fantasy’ because the sound of the “Tron” is literally plastered all over both of these 100% instrumental gems!

TRION are a Dutch Symphonic Prog trio made up of ex and current members of the bands: FLAMBOROUGH HEAD, LEAP DAY and ODYSSICE.
They are like a melding of all the great instrumental parts of albums by early KING CRIMSON, BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST, MOODY BLUES, GRACIOUS!, SPRING, GREENSLADE, IQ, GENESIS and YES, all rolled into one magically melodious, beautifully crafted set of Prog symphonies that are of course led by the classic sound of the Mellotron, but the other keyboards and the guitar work are all quite delicious as well!

So, with no dodgy vocals to be concerned about, all you need to do is lie back and concentrate on all the glorious tuneful music that TRION albums deliver. Both albums are ESSENTIAL additions to any Prog collection… nothing more needs to be said really, except for this… I saw a review once that cited a TRION album as “a Mellotron fan's wet dream!”
Well, I guess we should be including a free box of tissues with every copy ordered. J

The musician line-up for ‘Tortoise’ is: Edo Spanninga (flute / oboe / strings / organ / cello / vibe Mellotron samples / Elka / Leslie speaker cabinet), Eddie Mulder (acoustic & electric guitars / bass) and Menno Boomsma (drums / percussion).

Jasper Joppe Geerts created the cover art for ‘Tortoise’, and it is no surprise to discover that he is indeed a Roger Dean aficionado!
